Lander University students (left to right) Zach Swartzentruber, of Abbeville; Ayla Edmiston, of Cayce; Carley Cannon, of Chapin; and Elisa Howansky, of Westminster, were honored with awards during the 2022 Association of Southeastern Biologists meeting in Little Rock, Arkansas. Swartzentruber presented his research titled “Heads up: The effects of age, sex, and group size of vigilance in white-tailed deer,” and received second place for the John C. Johnson Award for Excellence in Student research; Edmiston presented her research titled “Local geographic variation in the secondary metabolites of Usnea strigosa,” and received an honorable mention for the John C. Johnson Award for Excellence in Student Research; Cannon presented her research titled “Investigation of temporal variation in secondary metabolites of Usnea strigosa,” and received first place for the John C. Johnson Award for Excellence in Student research; and Howansky presented their research titled “Predation risk affects group formation of mammals in Upstate South Carolina,” and received an honorable mention for the John C. Johnson Award for Excellence in Student Research.
